Cities

That with all of my heart,
I should start with where I stand.
I will make a new start,
And so become who I am.
Not just to know, not just see
But to actually be
All I can:
The total person I am.

That without giving in,
I should work with what I feel.
Though I suffer and sin,
‘Least I’ll accept what is real.
Since from the roots of our pain
Grows a garden so fair,
We should aim
To bring to life what is there.

There are fields full of flowers
No human hand has grown.
There’s a sun shining showing
That this earth will hold Her own
That this earth will hold on strong,
That her people will stand tall and proud,
And the song
Will ring thru the crowd:

That the city shall stand,
That the city will not fall
When the law of the land
Is the love that conquers all.
That there will come a time
When the hawk and the dove
Join to sign
A lasting treaty of love.

I can still hear the cannon,
The clarion call to battle.
They will ring thru a lifetime
In my ears, in my blood.
On the streets once ablaze,
On the hills seared from above,
We will raise
A living tribute to love.

Then the people will stand!
No the people will not fall
When the law of the land
Is the love that conquers all.
As the Word is fulfilled,
In this time, in this place,
We will build
The Temple of the Human Race.
